Music therapy sessions can be active music making on a variety of instruments such as keyboard, xylophones, small percussion, large percussion, ukulele, and props. How are Goals for therapy established?
I work with the individual and family to determine what the goals for services will be. Additionally, I spend the first few sessions assessing responses to music, seeing what the individual is drawn to, as well as looking for strengths and areas of need. I then develop individualized music activities to address needs established. At the same time, I follow the individual’s need within session. Needs can change by the week, day, or minute. I maintain flexibility and creativity to meet needs in the moment, while keeping the overall goal in mind.
